Little things that will make you happier

Updated: May 15, 2021

Happiness is an emotional state characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, and fulfilment. While it can have many definitions, the meaning behind them remains positive.

When most people describe feelings of happiness, they talk about their momentary feelings, which indicates that 'feeling happy' is mostly referring to the present moment. However, it’s given that when someone experiences numerous situations of positive nature, they might describe their overall life (or at least this period of increased positivity in their life) as positive and happy.

Focusing on the momentary feeling of happiness might bring you more of such situations, where the positive emotions outweigh the negative and improve your overall insight on life.

I came up with a couple of little things that might help to increase your mood and lighten up your day:

  • Wake up early and start your day while looking at the sunrise, reading a book, sipping a coffee or doing whatever activity you enjoy. Morning sets the mood for the whole day, even though something bad may happen later on and you will feel bitter about it for the rest of the day, let your morning be the mood-setter and enjoy this relaxing part of your day while it lasts.

  • Buy something you like. It seems obvious but when I imply to buy something you like, I do not mean that skirt or pair of sunglasses you want. Sure, they can bring you happiness but this boosts the materialist inside of you and I think materialism is not the way to go around happiness! Try buying a cup of coffee at a cafe where you have never been to before, buy a painting that will inspire you and brighten up your mood whenever you look at it. Or, buy yourself some flowers. It is not a rule you only have to receive flowers as a gift. Try buying the ones that you like and see for yourself.

OF COURSE, IF YOU ARE NOT ALLERGIC!

  • Watch a funny video online. There are a lot of videos online, from funny videos of kids to videos of cats pushing their owner's stuff off the shelves. If you have a more malicious personality, you will enjoy people falling, tripping over or just having bad luck in general.

  • Turn on the volume and dance to your favourite song. Dancing is a way of showing your happiness by moving your body to the rhythm. It’s an ancient custom that has been around for countless generations and let me tell you, it’s for sure not by an accident.

  • Go out for a walk. Get your daily dose of vitamin D from the Sun. Sunshine has calming effects and if you sit down and let the Sun shine on you it might make you sleepy and drowsy, however, this feeling might be the exact thing you need. To slow down and enjoy the moment, while feeling the energy being pulled from your body by the Sun.

There is beauty inside everything around us, every single moment we experience is a small piece of a bigger puzzle; our life.

And if we experience just enough of those moments filled with happiness, we may start perceiving our life as a happy one.
