Good deed a day, even in quarantine!

Everyone feels down sometimes, especially these days when the feelings of loneliness, anxiety and depression took over our every day lives. In quarantine, many people may feel lonely and depressed and it’s okay for you to feel that way too.

One good deed per day may lighten up somebody’s day and make them feel happier, but it can also make you feel better about yourself. Doing something unexpectedly good for someone else — especially someone you don't even know — can make you feel human and alive. It takes so little to do just that, and yet few people actually do. Just one good deed a day can inspire a feeling of purpose in you, a feeling that there is meaning to your life. That feeling, even if only achieved once a day, can make the difference between depression and happiness.

Here are 5 ideas of good deeds you can part-take in today, even in quarantine:

  • Give someone a compliment. – So trivial, yet so effective! One sentence is all it takes for a human to feel better. If you compliment someone every day, people around you are going to notice and may repay your kindness in similar ways; by also giving you a compliment and boosting your self-esteem.

e.g. Your hair looks amazing!

and if you cannot find anything to compliment, try saying something in exclamation. e.g. Are those new shoes?!

See? I didn’t say I liked them, I simply brought up the possibility that they may be new.

  • Smile. – Walking around the street with big smile on your face can come of sort of creepy, right? That’s why many people don’t even bother trying smiling and automatically switch to 'the resting B face mode'. However, happiness is contagious and simply by putting on a big non-creepy smile as you are checking out at the store will set the cashier into a better mood.

  • Make the call that you have been putting off. – By calling someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, you will asure them that you still care about them and make them and yourself feel happier.

  • Ask an acquaintance of yours about their day. – This is quite obvious but people LOVE talking about themsleves.

  • Buy someone a gift just because. – This can be anything that will make the person receiving the gift happy. My personal favourite would be food and snacks but don’t limit yourself.

The smallest things have the biggest impact.
